Enjoy the Winter Season with Classic Harbor Line!

We are excited to share that Classic Harbor Line has been featured in Untapped New York, a leading online magazine known for exploring the city’s hidden history and rare experiences. Their latest article highlights our Urban Naturalist Tour: Seals, Seabirds, and Winter Wildlife cruise and our full lineup of seasonal winter sails, and we are thrilled to receive their attention.

What We’ve Got Going On

Untapped New York focused on our Urban Naturalist Winter Cruise, a special experience running from January through March 2026. This cruise explores New York City’s abandoned and forgotten islands. These islands include sites that have been claimed by wildlife and reshaped by time. Guests relax inside a warm, 1920s-style yacht while learning from expert urban naturalists. As a matter of fact, the article celebrates the chance to spot harbor seals, winter seabirds, and other animals that thrive in NYC’s cold-weather ecosystems. We are happy to see this unique cruise recognized for its immersive focus on wildlife and history.

Additionally, the feature also highlights our many seasonal winter sailings. Untapped New York noted our cozy holiday experiences, which include live jazz cruises, caroling cruises, and our relaxing winter sunset trips. Each cruise offers warm cocoa or festive cocktails, along with peaceful views of the winter harbor. Our guests enjoy intimate seating, soft lighting, and a calm escape from the winter rush. We love sharing these small moments of comfort with locals and visitors each year.

Thank you Untapped Team!

We are grateful for this recognition from Untapped New York. By and large, their coverage helps more people discover the beauty of NYC’s winter waterways. For that reason, we look forward to welcoming new guests aboard our classic yachts this season. If you want winter wildlife, calm harbor views, or a festive escape, we have a cruise waiting for you.

At Classic Harbor Line, we’re excited to be featured in Downtown Mag, highlighting our unique tours. NYC’s Abandoned Islands sailing tour offers a one-of-a-kind experience for city explorers.

THE EXPERIENCE

Guests depart from Pier 62 aboard our elegant vessel, Yacht Manhattan.
The tour takes you through the majestic waters of the Hudson and East River. Many visitors are surprised to learn the East River is actually a saltwater tidal estuary.

Led by expert naturalists like Gabriel Willow and Russell Jacobs, our guides bring history alive. They share captivating stories about the islands’ past, including quarantine hospitals and more. North Brother Island, for example, once held Typhoid Mary during quarantine days.

You’ll also discover the thriving wildlife now inhabiting these serene bird sanctuaries. We provide binoculars onboard, but guests are welcome to bring their own for better viewing. Our cruise is timed with sunset, offering breathtaking views of the city skyline. Golden light reflects beautifully over the quiet islands, creating unforgettable moments.

Along the route, we pass Mill Rock Island, once fortified during the War of 1812. Belmont Island, created from tunnel excavation, adds historical depth to the journey. U Thant Island, named after the former UN secretary-general, was once a retreat for meditators.

South Brother Island once hosted Jacob Rupert, the early owner of the Yankees. Legend has it Babe Ruth visited Rupert, though it remains a local myth.

Stories of the HMS Hussar, a ship carrying gold sunk at Hell Gate, add intrigue. While the gold was never recovered, these stories ignite the imagination.

Many guests, like Brynn Theurer, have shared how much they enjoyed the experience. She appreciated the beautiful ship, drinks, bites, and mesmerizing city views.

Downtown Mag’s Jo’Ann Dean loved learning from our entertaining naturalists. She enjoyed birding with binoculars and relaxing with a glass of bubbly onboard. Grace Capobianco calls us the “Porsche of Sightseeing” in NYC—and we’re proud of that.

Experience the Magic of Winter Wildlife with Classic Harbor Line’s “Urban Naturalist” Cruise

Classic Harbor Line is so excited for our feature in Timeout. Contributor Danielle Hallock came aboard and was able to experience the cruise our whole team has been excited about.

When you think of New York City, towering skyscrapers and bustling streets likely come to mind. But did you know that just beyond the city’s skyline lies a thriving winter wildlife sanctuary? At Classic Harbor Line, we invite you to discover this hidden natural wonder on our Urban Naturalist: Seals, Seabirds, and Winter Wildlife cruise.

Recently, guests joined us for this unique adventure, and their experience was nothing short of magical. Boarding the Manhattan II, our beautifully crafted 1920s-style yacht, they were immediately struck by the vessel’s timeless charm. With its warm wooden interiors, heated cabin, and panoramic windows, the yacht provided a cozy retreat from the winter chill.

As the cruise set sail from Chelsea Piers, our onboard urban naturalist shared fascinating stories about the harbor’s incredible transformation. Over the years, improved water quality and environmental efforts have brought seals, seabirds, and even dolphins back to New York’s waters. Winter, in particular, is a special time to witness this resurgence, as seals migrate to the harbor from colder northern regions.

The highlight of the journey was the seal sightings near Hoffman and Swinburne Islands. With binoculars provided onboard, guests marveled at the playful seals swimming alongside the boat. Some even spotted adorable seal pups lounging on the rocky shores, a heartwarming reminder of nature’s resilience.

But the cruise isn’t just about wildlife. Our urban naturalist also shared intriguing tales of the harbor’s rich history, from its role in quarantine efforts during 19th-century epidemics to the unique tidal patterns of the Hudson River. As the yacht glided past iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, guests gained a newfound appreciation for the harbor’s dual role as a cultural and ecological treasure.

To complement the experience, we served a selection of delicious treats, including freshly baked pastries, bagels with cream cheese, and seasonal fruit. Whether you’re an early riser or prefer an afternoon adventure, our morning and afternoon departures are timed to maximize wildlife sightings during low tide.

Join us this winter for an unforgettable journey into the heart of New York’s harbor. Our Urban Naturalist: Seals, Seabirds, and Winter Wildlife cruise is perfect for nature enthusiasts, families, and anyone looking to see the city from a fresh perspective.
