The best way to understand the many facets of climate change in New York City is by traveling along its waterways on an architecture boat tour. Join us aboard Yacht Manhattan or Manhattan II for the AIANY Climate Change Tour: Resiliency, Sustainable Architecture, and the Future of NYC! Learn about how climate change is affecting our city and people, and the actions NYC is taking to mitigate pending threats and reduce its carbon footprint. This fully narrated NYC climate change boat tour will address the pressing need for sustainable design and greater resiliency. We’ll delve into how New York City is reducing fossil fuel consumption, strengthening its natural habitats, and reimagining its transportation infrastructure. This is an NYC architecture tour that focuses on climate change in NYC and will also explore the importance of the environmental justice movement in New York City.

On this NYC climate change boat tour, hear compelling and comprehensive steps that interdisciplinary teams of urban planners, architects, landscape architects, developers, and community groups are taking to address storm surges, intense rains, and hotter temperatures.

While we cruise, our AIANY tour guide will talk about NYC climate change as we pass by many up-close examples of green buildings and sustainable designs that reduce energy consumption, water usage, and pollution.

See firsthand the importance of the environmental justice movement in New York City. People of color and low-income families have often been pushed into low-lying neighborhoods that are most prone to flooding, have the highest levels of pollution, and suffer most from the urban heat island effect.

Highlights on the Climate Change and NYC Architecture Tour include

  • Experience numerous examples of green buildings in New York City that adhere to the LEED and Passive House standards. These residential and office buildings are reducing their carbon footprint and creating healthier living environments.
  • With this in mind, 500,000 buildings in New York City will soon need to comply with ambitious climate change legislation. This will necessitate a transition away from fossil fuels and the implementation of energy-efficiency retrofits to meet the new regulations.
  • Specifically, low-income neighborhoods and communities of color often face a larger range of environmental and health threats compared to wealthier neighborhoods.
  • Delve into competing plans for how NYC should best protect itself from future hurricanes: Should we build massive flood walls with movable gates at the entrances to the harbor and rivers, should we limit ourselves to barriers along shorelines or should we embrace nature-based solutions?
  • We will cruise by green buildings, sustainable parks, renewable energy sites, post-Superstorm Sandy flood walls and resistance measures, recycling plants, and the future home of an offshore wind turbine assembly pier!
  • Experience new wetlands and tidal marshes along the tour route that play a role in mitigating storm surges, fostering diverse ecosystems, and creating new park space on this Climate Change tour that includes NYC architecture.

Quiet Cruising.

This climate change and Manhattan architecture yacht cruise is a heavily narrated tour experience. We recommend it for those seeking an informative, exciting, and content-rich trip. Guests must keep their conversations at a reasonable level to ensure that all can hear the narration. For guests looking for a more social experience, please consider our sunset cruises, day sails, city lights cruises, or one of our other non-narrated events. This is NOT for children under 12. For guests with children under 12 please consider our Statue & Skyline tours, day sails, or any other minimally narrated daytime event.

What is Not Included?

  • The tour does not guarantee a full circumnavigation of Manhattan. On rare occasions, the Spuyten Duyvil train bridge is inoperable and cannot open for us to pass through. This is not known until our tour is underway. River closures may also occur for a number of reasons. There are no refunds for tours that cannot fully circumnavigate. We accommodate such cases with a tour that features a double backing of the route and further details of the waterfront sites.
  • Gratuity is not included; however, if you purchased the ‘Groups of 10’ or more ticket type, a 10% gratuity is automatically applied.
  • Food is not part of the inclusion. You can purchase light fare options in advance with your tickets or onboard.
